Arsenal Gunners

The Arsenal Gunners Soccer Club are an English professional soccer club based in north London. They play in the FA Premier League and are one of the most successful clubs in soccer. The Arsenal Gunners have won thirteen First Division and Premier Leagure titles, ten FA Cups and in 2005-06 reached the UEFA Champions League final. Arsenal are also members of the G-14 group of leading European soccer clubs.

The Arsenal Gunners were founded in Woolwich, south-east London, in 1886, but in 1913 they moved north across the city to Arsenal Stadium, Highbury, which was their home until May 2006. In July 2006 the club moved to the new 60,000 seat Emirates Stadium in nearby Ashburton Grove, Islington. Arsenal have a long-standing and fierce rivalry with neighbours Tottenham Hotspurs, located four miles away in Tottenham, whom they play in the North London derby.

The Arsenal Gunners were founded as Dial Square in 1886 by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, but were renamed Royal Arsenal shortly afterwards. They renamed themselves again to Woolwich Arsenal after turning professional in 1891. The Arsenal Gunners joined the Football League in 1893, starting out in the Second Division, and won promotion to the First Division in 1904. However, the clubs geographic isolation resulted in lower attendances than those of other clubs, which led to the club becoming mired in financial pro0blems. In 1913, soon after relegation back to the Second Division, they moved across the Thames to the new Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, north London. They dropped 'Woolwich' from their name the following year. Arsenal only finished in fifth place in 1919, but nevertheless were elected to rejoin the First Division at the expense of local rivals Tottenham Hotspurs, by reportedly dubious means.

Chelsea Blues

Chelsea Football Club, also known as The Blues, Chelsea Blues or previously as The Pensioners, were founded in 1905 as one of the most famous English Premier League soccer teams. The clubs home ground is the 42,360 capacity Stamford Bridge soccer ground in Fulham, south-west London. Despite their name, the club is based just outside the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. It is on the Fulham Road, which runs between Fulham and Chelsea. The club have won three league titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups and two UEFA Cup Winners Cups.

Unusual for a soccer club, Chelsea Football Club have only ever had one home ground, Stamford Bridge, where they have played since foundation, though it has gone through major changes through the years. Starting with an open bowl-like design and one covered terrace, Stamford Bridge had an original capacity of around 100,000. The early 1930s saw the construction of a terrace on the southern part of the ground with a roof that covered around 1/5th of the stand. It eventually became known as the "Shed End", the home of Chelseas most loyal and vocal supporters, though the origins of the name are unclear.

2005 was the Chelsea Football Clubs 100th Birthday. Led by captain John Terry and high-scoring midfielder Frank Lampard, the celebrated it in style by becoming Premiership champions in a record-breaking season (most clean sheets, fewer goals conceded, most victories, most points earned), League Cup winners with a 3-2 win over Liverpool at the Millennium Stadium and reaching the Champions League semi-finals. The following year, they were again League Champions, equalling their own Premiership record of 29 wins set the previous season. They also became the fifth team to win back-to-back championships since the Second World War and the only London club to do so since the 1930s.

Manchester United Red Devils

Manchester United F.C. known as the Red Devils, are an English football club, and is based at Old Trafford Football Ground, Stretford, Manchester. The club is one of the most successful in the country, having won the FA Premier League/Football League 15 times, FA Cup 11 times, the League Cup twice, the European Cup twice and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup once. The club has had the highest average attendance in English football for the past 34 seasons, with the exception of 1987-1989 during redevelopment at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United Red Devils was formed as Newton Health (L&YR) F.C. in 1878 as the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Health. After nearing bankruptcy in 1902, Manchester United F.C. was taken over by J.H. Davies who changed its name to Manchester United. The Old Trafford Football Ground was bombed during the Second World War, leading the club to seek charity from their then-illustrious neighbours Manchester City, who allowed them to play their games at Maine Road for a period. United appointed Sir Matt Busby as manager after the Second World War, and his then-unheard-of policy of producing most of the players through the clubs youth team brought great success, with the club winning the Football League in 1956 and 1957. This success was halted by the Munich air disaster of 1958, in which eight of the clubs players died. It was thought that the club might fold, but instead went on to win the football league in 1965 and 1967, and the European Cup in 1968.

The Manchester United Red Devils did not see success again until the 1990s and early 2000s when Alex Ferguson guided the Red Devils to eight league championships in eleven yearsm most recently in the 2002-03 season. In 1999, Manchester United became the only team to win the UEFA Champions League, FA Premier League and the FA Cup in the same season. The club had been run as a Public Limited Company since 1991, and an attempted takeover by Rupert Murdoch had been blocked by the British Government in 1999, but in 2005 Malcolm Glazer completed a hostile takeover of the club which plunged the club into massive debt as his bid based on borrowing most of the money.
